Today in class we practiced using iMovie. Hannah Patterson and I initially decided to make it an advertisement for Bluemont and the Education program at K-State. We filmed pretty much everything we could find that might be useful, then sat down to explore iMovie.
At first, I didn't like that we used templates to create trailers. That means my trailer wouldn't be original, and there'd be thousands of others like it out there.
However, once I started playing around with it, I was pleasantly surprised. All of the templates looked professional and complete, and made each video more entertaining. They each have their own personality, so you can create virtually anything on here.
It was also very easy to use. Hannah and I had no prior experience with iMovie, but found it to be intuitive and easy to navigate. After putting a few clips in, we watched what we had created and both gasped. iMovie had taken our unprofessional clips and made it so cool looking. From then on, we knew didn't have to worry about it looking weird or sloppy. Also, my first worry about being unoriginal, few people are going to be so familiar with iMovie that they recognize one of their templates.
My mind is reeling with ideas of how this could be useful in a classroom. I could use it to introduce a subject or to show parents or supervisors what my classroom is like. I could spice up a lesson or have them watch a trailer as homework. I could show them how to use it and have them make projects with it. There are so many ways!
